Old modern folkers meet contemporary wyrd folkers. A sort of meeting among the titans!
Comus’ “First Utterance” is a real cult album that outstands sounding like no other one. Grief, mental disorder, terror and a eruption of violence at the service of acoustic instruments, with the music that at first sight seems to follow a folk plot and then unhinge it. Spots of beautific tranquillity appears through the mayhem. The whole raw malt is extolled through the filter of literature (John Milton is peeping from an ancient greek scenery). “First Utterance” is a seminal album that left a determinant influence upon thousands of groups and future albums.
It’s a heart missing listening to Roger Wootton and Lisa Isaksson together: Comus meets Piu!
“Down” has a different treatment from the original sounding like a “First Utterance” track. “Song of Comus” is an impressive effort that get close to the original high standards. Lisa Isaksson as a good actress plays very well a prominent role singing in the place of the original female singer. A difficult part if we consider that weird wide range of vocal madness that made “First Utterance” a standing alone album. “Equatorial Changes” and “Cinnamon Sea” are two gems from Piu with the beautiful Lisa’s voice in evidence. Both tracks with the Comus-treatment works well. Wootton’s “Out of The Coma”, probably a new track, fits perfectly in the Utterance-corpus. “The prisoner”, with a surprise ending, may be is the most considerable episode of the album .
Comus lives again flowing like a subterranean river under the new lands of folk music.
