Thistletown - 2008 Rosemarie

Quality: FLAC (tracks, CUE)

CD Big Bertha Records Bigbert003, 2008, UK

01 Rosemarie
02 Glow Worm
03 Under the Trees
04 Dance with the Sea
05 Labyrinth
06 Oak and Ash
07 Moon is a Pearl
08 The Sun is Coming Up

Andrew Jarvia: accordion, bass, drums, glockenspiel, harmonium, melodica, percussion, trumpet
Ben Tweddell: acoustic guitar
Benet Walsh: mandolin, violin, bass, clarinet, guitar
Michael Tyack: saz, lute, electric guitar, cittern, chanting (03)
Matthew Bennett: percussion
Tiffany Bryant: vocals, flute, hand percussion
Lydia Tweddell: vocals, hand percussion
Al Davies: bass (05)

Debut album by Thistletown, a Cornish five-piece who live on a boat, grow their own vegetables, and make some of the most elegantly romantic music you have ever heard. The band formed a little over a year ago after Tiffany and Lydia bonded over a shared love of nature, 70s maxi dresses and folk-rock acts like Pentangle, Heron and the Trees. Lydia's boyfriend Ben had been busy developing a unique acoustic guitar style while Tiffany's multi-instrumentalist boyfriend Jarvis had been playing accordion, trumpet and glockenspiel in folk clubs along the Cornish coast.

...

Excellent vibe, reminiscent of 70's folk bands like Spriguns, C.O.B, Forest etc. Musically, its all acoustic, with some nice trumpet that reminds me of Marc Brierlys 'Welcome to the Citadel'. Twin Female vocals in the same vein as 'Trees' etc....a strong rural, esoteric atmosphere.

Highly Recommended...

First solo album. All songs writen by Sharron Kraus

Kraus' debut album would not have sounded at all out of place if it had been issued, say, in 1970 or 1971, at the time when such moody contemporary British folk was cresting. That's not at all to say that it's revivalist, or uncomfortably imitative; indeed, to listeners who love that vintage genre, it's more likely a high recommendation. In its ambience, the album strongly recalls the work of Shirley Collins, Sandy Denny, and more obscure songstresses like Vashti Bunyan. She's a decent songwriter, and very much fits in the British folk lineage with her sad yet dignified melodies and lyrics with plenty of images evoking nature, epic love, and mythological aspects. There are (for this style) out-of-the-ordinary up-front depictions of incest (in "Twins") and references to modern life (in the shiny car and taxi driver of the title track), though these aren't too typical of the compositions. There isn't enough rock to the backing to call this a folk-rock record, but it's definitely far more contemporary than standard British folk, both in attitude and also in the pleasant variation of instrumental accompaniment, as in the ominously echoing keyboard of "Beautiful Twisted" and the bass clarinet squeals of "Song of the Unfree."

My friend Laike (Christofer Ståhle) has a new album, "Fang and Det Senaste" (Trapped in the Latest) - 2014 (Vinyl LP 180g Die-Cut Cover, Monterey Discos DM-004,  500 copies edition).

As before, all 12 songs are very different. Very catchy melodies, excellent arrangements and a rich selection of instruments are dominant impressions on first hearing.
For fans of Lisa O Piu (Lisa Isaksson, David Svedmyr) plays a lot of instruments. Album contains music with very nice touch of psychedelic music from early '70.

And If it is hard to me to choose one in particular, at this time I like the most:
A3 Frånvarons Tid (The Age of abscence) and A6 Fang and Det Senaste (Trapped In The News),
B4 Om Jag Fel Har (If I 'm Wrong) and the last song B6 Djurens Hämnd (The Revenge Of The Animals).

Highly Recommended!!!!

Bobin Jon Michael Eirth is the man behind In Gowan Ring and Birch Book. Since the mid 90s, this prolific American singer-songwriter has recorded a dozen full-length albums.

On this 7", Eirth gives his very own folk take on two tracks that he loves:

- Taking Wing is a cover of a song by Mark Fry, the legendary English psychedelic folk musician. It appeared at the end of I Lived in Trees, a truly beautiful album that Fry recorded with The A. Lords.
B’ee - Voice, Acoustic Guitar, Mellotron flutes, Organ, Bowed Glockenspiel.

- Jacob Fleet is a cover of a song by English post-punk band And Also The Trees. It was taken from their synth-infused album Green Is The Sea.
B’ee - Voice, Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Mellotron Strings, Drum, Tubular Bells.

03 Lach Na Fooey
04 Synge's Chair
05 Epitaph
06 Magpie Suite

Live performance by Fern Knight at WFMU on Irene Trudel's Show on June 02 2008:

James Wolf: violin,
Jesse Sparhawk: harp, bass,
Margie Wienk: vocals, cello, acoustic guitar,
Jim Ayre: drums, Flying V

Engineer: Irene Trudel

On Fern Knight's new self-titled album, the listener is engulfed in imagery of pastoral scenes of folkloric greenery and of an earlier mystical age. Fern Knight is a they, not a she, a quartet bring fronted by the lovely voice of Margie Wienk.
As they describe it, "The calm surface of harp, cello and violin are juxtaposed against the perfectly timed distorted squalls of a Flying V with the grounding blanket of electric bass underneath."

Note:
Here is the full (~42min) live performance by Fern Knight at WFMU, included all 6 tracks, not usual 5 (which will find on the web).

This is absolutely fantastic rendition of song, minimalistic, raw and very powerfull, especialy Epitph (King Crimson cover) have so much more beauty than studio version on the album.

Biography:
Laike is a one man project that started about 1,5 years ago. Laike consists of Christofer Ståhle who has played in several different bands for many years before the Laike project. Among other things he played the flute on the album ”Beautiful Days” by Majessic Dreams, released in 2008.
After more than 10 years in different bands he decided that he wanted to make music on his own with just a little help from some of his friends. The album ”Långt från stadslivets dån” (Far away from the noice of the city) was mostly recorded on the country side outside the town Lund where Christofer lives. In his home beside the biggest field in Sweden he could sit and think about arrangements without stress.
The sources of inspiration are many but during the last years Christofer has been very much into British folk bands from the seventies like Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and Pentangle. These type of songs have been combined with more rytmically driven songs. 2 years ago Christofer lived in Shanghai for 6 months and the improvisations you can here between some of the songs of the album were recorded in an oil cisterno of a Shanghai suburb. Right now Christofer is working on a new album.

This is unusual post in many ways. Some days ago I’ve received message from man name Christofer Ståhle (aka Laike), from Lund, Sweden, with link to hear one his song. I liked that song very much as entire album too.
Wow, great stuff. Very good flute playing, good arrangements too. Some psychedelic touch, not boring moments at all, every songs is different, it was a very difficult to select some become favorites; all is very good and “ask you” to listen again and again. Language is not problem for me; give some charm to my ears full of English. In a word there is a GREAT ALBUM.

The album will be released on 27 February 2012 on the British label Les Cousins Music. You have opportunity to hear now (few days before officially released, thanks Laike)

Recommended!!!

Roger Wootton & Piu - Cut the air at Mello Club - 2009

Quality: CBR 256 kbps Label: Mellotronen, MELLOCD 030/MELLO LP7, Sweden 01 Down (Like a Moviestar) 02 Song to Comus 03 Equatorial Changes 04 Cinnamon Sea 05 Out of the Coma 06 The Prisoner Roger Wootton (Comus) and Piu, performed two unforgettable evenings at the Mello Club in Stockholm. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of December 2008 did Roger Wootton (frontman from Comus) perform together with the band Piu (the Kings and Queen of Swedish Acid Folk). Both concerts was held in front of a fantastic and thrilled audience. Claes Persson (The Mellotronen soundman on almost all MELLO-releases) and his assistant Fredrik Andersson recorded both shows. They performed songs from both Comus albums First Utterance & To Keep from Crying in absolute phenomenal versions. The CD also includes 2 songs from Piu´s forthcoming album and a never before performed Comus song! The CD is housed in a nice Digi-pack with detailed story and pictures. I can just tel that the audience was thrilled! The CD and LP are limited to 1000 copies and the vinyl version comes in three different shapes. 700 copies in black vinyl / 300 copies in limited multi-coloured vinyl.
